DEATH ROW: SUPREME COURT CONFIRMED SENTENCES
List of inmates whose sentences have been finalized by the Supreme Court. They are subject to strict confinement while awaiting execution. Most have applied for retrial. Since 1945, only 4 confirmed sentences have been overturned. Also salient is the high number of sentences which were raised to death from life imprisonment upon appeal of the prosecution. Of these, two-- Watanabe Kiyoshi and Kanekawa Hajime-- would have already been released upon serving 20 years. The case of Okunishi Masaru, originally found innocent, is a separate tragedy.

Originally sentenced to life Imprisonment. Death sentence imposed on appeal. Defendant served 3.5 years for abandoning the corpse in the first incident. After release, he was arrested for a separate murder. During interrogation, he confessed to murder in the second incident. The district court sentenced him to life imprisonment and the high court raised th sentence to death. The sentence of death is therefore a punishment for honesty and admitting wrongdoing. |
