Kawabata Tatsushi (aged 62) was arrested for setting a man in a wheelchair on fire at an Osaka hospital. Both he and the victim were hospitalized at the time. The case against him hinged on the testimony of an on duty nurse.
The prosecution demanded ten years. Kawabata was tried by a jury and found not guilty. The judge wrote that the case was most probably arson, but the eyewitness testimony was unreliable.

車椅子放火死:入院中だった男性に無罪判決 大阪地裁 毎日新聞 2013年10月09日 01時11分 大阪市東成区の病院で２０１１年、別の病室に入院していた男性の車椅子に放火し死亡させたとして、傷害致死罪に問われた川端達指被告（６２）の裁判員裁判の判決が８日、大阪地裁であった。長井秀典裁判長は「被告が当時、現場にいたことを示す証拠はない」として、無罪（求刑・懲役１０年）を言い渡した。 入院中だった川端被告は、阿部成夫さん（当時６２歳）の病室で車椅子に火を付け、阿部さんに全身やけどを負わせて死亡させたとして起訴された。川端被告は無罪を主張し、出火直後、現場で被告を見たという看護師らの証言の信用性が争点だった。 長井裁判長は、何者かが放火して阿部さんが死亡したと事件性を認定した。しかし、出火当時に川端被告が現場と別の病室から出てきたとする患者らの証言があり、「看護師が消火活動時などの記憶と取り違えて証言した可能性は否定できない」と指摘、川端被告の関与を否定した
